As a nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free practice, we are always on the hunt for vegan protein without nuts or soy that can be integrated into a variety of meals and snacks, like – you guessed it – smoothies!

Our Take

The vanilla flavor is subtle and not too sweet. The smell and flavor is almost identical to the Garden of Life Raw Vegan Protein Powder we’ve grown to love with only a subtle earthy smell, attributed to the greens. The relatively high vegan protein content has additional benefits of sprouted greens and grains and is organic, as well, with low sugar (<1 gram). Even with the sprouted grains and legumes, this protein powder is gluten-free and gentle to digest for those with aversions to beans.

It’s a perfect add-in to protein pancakes or to a variety of smoothie flavors/recipes with its low glycemic index (you know how we’re off the sugar wagon!), added greens (like alfalfa, spinach, kale, broccoli, carrot and beet – yay!) and versatile vanilla flavor.

One last note: The probiotic content was not a strong selling point because we supplement gut flora with a high dose of probiotics via capsule. Because of the way we use protein powder, which includes smoothies as well as baked goods, the probiotic power is diminished significantly; even used in a smoothie, we can’t vouch for the healthy bacteria making it to the small intestine intact because we haven’t seen or performed the research. The Cherry Cordial Smoothie | A Delicious Recipe!

Wow, this smoothie. It’s so good, it can easily be misconstrued for dessert! Particularly if you freeze it and serve it as such 🙂 Nothing like a delicious finish to a meal that also packs a punch of antioxidant goodness for your whole body! The coffee and sweetness of the cherries offer a richness to the flavor that is satiating and indulgent. Enjoy for breakfast, lunch, or even dessert!

Cherry Cordial Smoothie

Serves 1-2

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk or milk alternative
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1/4 cup frozen, pitted cherries
  • 1/4 banana
  • 1/4 cup brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1 scoop protein powder of choice
  • 2 Tbl of avocado
  • Optional: cacao powder, maca, ground flax seeds
  • Toppings: chia seeds, granola, seeds, etc. Go nuts! #punny

Here’s a phrase you’ve likely heard lately, and if not, you will, and most likely while discussing the newest diet that your PureBarre and BLAST friends have started.

Keto.

Or Ketogenic Diet, to be accurate.

If you dabbled in the Atkins Diet in the 90’s and 00’s,  you are probably familiar with “ketosis,” or the phase of the Atkins Diet that indicated you were burning fat for fuel instead of sugar (as most of us do). Ketosis also came hand-in-hand with the less-attractive side effects of bad breath, mood swings and constipation.

Although similar to Atkins with its relatively higher ratios of protein and fat than the typical American intakes, the ketogenic diet, or keto diet, takes a cleaner, less-processed approach to protein and fat sources and has risen to the forefront of health due to the incredible health benefits that have been observed over decades. Some say over thousands of years, as fasting has been a religious practice since the dawn of time. (Those unpleasant side effects still hold, but only last for 1-2 weeks, say practitioners.)

Where did it come from?

Like many other diets, the keto diet was originally “prescribed” as a method to treat disease. Doctors used this method of eating to treat children with epilepsy in the 1920s. In its original form, the diet reduced carbohydrate intake to just 5% of caloric intake with 75% from fat and 20% from protein. Today, many people who subscribe to the keto way of eating alter the amounts & types of carbohydrates, protein and fat to include 30%/40%/30% respectively, all of which are clean, aka non-processed. For instance, bacon, though OK for Atkins, is not OK for keto.

So, what’s the big deal about keto?

As mentioned above, keto brings the body into ketosis where it burns fat for fuel instead of sugar, thus burning through the fat stores in the body, simulating fasting and eventually achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Weight loss and weight maintenance are not the big deal, though.

The reduction, elimination and prevention of cancer cells, recovery from diabetes, reversal of cognitive impairments, like Alzheimer’s symptoms and brain fog, and protection against heart disease risk factors are the biggest headliners of benefits of the keto diet.

Wait, it does what? How?

By reducing the amount of glucose in our blood, insulin is not released. Insulin strongly influences the chemistry and balance of our bodies. It tells cells to store as much energy as possible, which means if we don’t burn the sugar, we store it as fat. Fat storage is a result of too much sugar, not too a result of too much fat.

Therefore, by eliminating carbs (and eating the right amount of protein, which, in excess, also gets stored as fat) and by keeping the carbohydrate stores empty, we avoid a flood of insulin being released that we can’t fully utilize, which triggers insulin resistance, which contributes to diabetes AND premature aging, oxidative stress, chronic systemic inflammation, and other degenerative conditions and diseases.

The keto diet offers a solution by eating in such a way that the body is quasi-fasting, insulin is not released, inflammation and insulin resistance are avoided, and disease is prevented.

The Main Take-Away

The ketogenic diet is a proven method of eating that yields impressive results. Its focus on healthy fats and protein, much like the foundation of other blood-sugar regulating diets, allows the body to heal and repair itself, prevent disease and even reverse damage.

As with any diet, do your research, apply what feels right for you, and have check-up’s with your trusted medical professional to track the changes through blood work and biomarkers.

Peachiarry Compote

Prep Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cans sliced peaches in pear juice
  • 1/3 cup frozen organic raspberries
  • 1 tbsp natural sweetener of choice
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Drain most of the juice from the cans of peaches, leaving a few tablespoons of liquid.

  2. Stir peaches, juice, raspberries, chia seeds and sweetener together in a bowl.

  3. Let sit for ~10 minutes until chia seeds form a gel around them.

  4. Top dish or dessert, and serve!

Relief for Extreme Fatigue & Chronic Stress

Extreme fatigue is no joke. In the simplest, crudest of terms, fatigue (or any dis-function) is caused by stress, and stress is stress. In other words, whether the stress is chemical, physical, or emotional, your body does not differentiate one type from the other. The stress response is triggered, and your physical health suffers. In this post, we’ll talk about the three main categories of stress and some health and lifestyle tips, tricks and techniques to combat stress – and the resulting fatigue – without turning to coffee to make it through your day!

Types of Stress Defined

Chemical stress includes exposure to toxins, whether that’s mold in the house, inhaling cleaning supplies, heavy metals in our water, or even consuming foods or drinks (or prescriptions) with chemicals that are disruptive.

Physical stress can include working longer hours than you can sustain over the long-haul without necessary breaks, spreading yourself too thinly, not getting enough rest or nutrition.

Emotional stress may be rooted in a dysfunctional work environment, toxic relationships or in a phase of reshaping your identity. It can also occur as a result of any uncertainty related to an important relationship or factor of your life (i.e. raising a teenager, diagnosis of a loved one, stress in a marriage, etc.).

It’s important to understand the ways stress can manifest in your life, so you can begin to identify them, then manage them accordingly to avoid long-term problems. Any combination of these stressors, particularly experienced over a long period of time, takes a BIG toll on your body.

Breaking the Cycle

The more tired you are, the lower the threshold you have for any stress. Your stores of mental, emotional and physical energy are depleted, and you cannot function. The less you can function optimally, the more stressed you’ll feel, which will further exhaust you, causing more stress. What a vicious cycle!

Here are a few tips that can help you manage extreme fatigue and chronic stress:
  1. BREATHE.
    Deep breathing is going to be your active stress management partner forevermore. It activates the relaxation nerve (vagus nerve) and gets the parasympathetic nervous system online, giving the sympathetic nervous system (the fight-or-flight response one) a break.
    When you’re feeling stressed, or you feel your blood pressure rising or your chest tightening, breathe. Focus on the area that is tight or otherwise talking to you, and breathe into that area. Mentally picture your breath flowing into that area. If you can close your eyes, and do this for 1-2 minutes, you’ll feel the difference.  Do this for 10-20 minutes a day, and you may accidentally develop a meditation practice. 🙂
  2. Take inventory.
    What are your stressors? List them.
    What can you let go of or delegate? Which items or activities can you postpone, avoid or say no to?
    What can you reframe in your mind to give you peace? Is there a belief, attitude or assumption that crops up in the moments you feel most stressed that would be in your best interest to change?
    Be aware of the underlying causes and take steps to change them.
  3. Tend to your stressors.
    What jumps out at you from the list that you feel most compelled to address? Trust your judgment as a guide to what to let go of, what to say no to, etc.
  4. Consider a few lifestyle changes.
    • Clean up your eating and upgrade your diet of processed, non-whole foods (i.e. soda, “diet” versions of food, crackers, candy, etc.) for better choices. Focus your grocery buying on the areas of the grocery store that are along the wall, i.e. produce section, fresh meats/cheese (go as cage-free, free range and organic as you can afford), etc. Minimize the amount of boxed or bagged foods you buy, particularly if the shelf-life is longer than two months. By fueling your body with better nutrients, you will allay some of the stress that might be caused by what you ingest while also giving your body the building blocks it needs to better combat the stress in other areas.
    • Cut back on sugar, caffeine and alcohol, which are counterproductive to reducing stress and anxiety.
    • Swap traditional cleaning and gardening supplies for better, non-toxic alternatives. Breathing in the fumes, vapors and chemicals in traditional cleaning products can contribute to auto-immune and allergic responses and hormone disruption.
    • Cultivate healthier relationships with friends and family who leave you feeling better when your time together is done. Speak up about your needs and allow loved ones to help you, even if that means cutting you some slack when you turn down invitations.
    • Find social or community outlets that allow you to learn new skills, like meditation, yoga, knitting, etc.
    • Talk to your doctor about critical nutrients you may be missing, like omega-3’s, B12, Magnesium, Vitamin D and Iron levels, all of which, when too low, lead to fatigue and brain fog.
      • Take a good quality multi-vitamin as a start, along with probiotics, which improve gut health. Mental stability and immune strength start in the gut; take care of it, and it will take care of you!
      • Look into adaptogenic herbs that help support the adrenal glands, like ashwaganda, holy basil, and rhodiola.
    • SLEEP! Good gracious, you need sleep more than ever, and it’s ok to go to bed early, say no to happy hours and take a nap on the weekends! Listen to your body and balance the need for social and community support with your need for rest.

The Main Takeaway for Fatigue & Stress Relief

Life can be stressful, and those stresses can take many shapes. Your individual tolerance for stress is unique to you, as are the ways to find relief. Take what you can from this list, apply it and tweak it as you learn what works. You are the most qualified to assess what you need.

One last thought: Avoid comparing yourself to others to determine what is “normal” or what you “should” be able to handle. Listen to your body and your instincts when you’re hitting a threshold. Ask for help, and be kind to yourself in your thoughts and activities.

If you don’t feel right after cleaning up your diet and lifestyle after a few months, see your doctor and ask him/her to offer more than medications to help you navigate this phase of fatigue.  Reach out to a health coach, who can help you translate any diagnosis into tangible, actionable steps, so you are stepping into optimal well-being without a slew of Rx’s.

Have we got a dish for you! This Lemon Basil Salmon will knock your socks off.

If you’ve been along for this wild ride with us for any length of time, you have likely caught on to our passion and penchant for eating healthy without spending a lot of time in the kitchen and infusing as much nutrition as we do flavor into each of our creations.

Lemon Basil Salmon is no different!

This cornerstone recipe is the perfect example of how food can be fuel and medicine. Because of the simple goodness that resides in this simple recipe, I want to take a minute to break it down…

Salmon, a good source of protein and for its healthy omega-3 fats, is a hearty base for any meal – whether a brunch, dinner party or party-of-one rice bowl! It’s a foundational item on our weekly shopping list, in fact. Steelhead trout has also been recommended as a good and sustainable seafood option and a delicious substitute in this recipe. (To find the best seafood in season, use the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood app found in Resources below.)

Basil, an MVP herb as far as we’re concerned with its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties on top of combating depression, cancer and disease, adds a savory flavor that blends with a wide range of cuisine, from Italian to Asian, making this dish easy to incorporate into any menu plan.

Lemon, with its tangy delight, is full of vitamin C, and as any Whole30’er knows, provides the acid necessary for good digestion, not to mention a little alkaline boost, as well!

Sea salt is more than just a flavor-enhancer, but actually contains high levels of micronutrients and minerals and only about 70% of the sodium found in normal table salt. PS. Once you go sea salt, you’ll never go back to normal salt due its chemical aftertaste. PPS. Some table salt brands contain sugar as an anti-caking agent, so read your labels.

Last, but not least… Garlic! Anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, cold-fighting and overall magical for the flourishing of healthy gut bacteria, the garlic rounds out this flavorful dish. Use it minced or as a powder, and increase or decrease to your liking!

Lay the fish on to the pre-oiled cookie sheet, sprinkle your spices, then top with a slice of lemon sans seeds.
Cook or broil until the top is slightly crispy. Keep the lemon intact. It’s deliciously tangy and tastes much better than a raw lemon. (I may or may not take my time eating these slices because they’re so good 😉 )

S&R Lemon Basil Salmon

Refreshing, savory, light and chockfull of healthful goodness! Perfect for a staying-in date night, a dinner party, or a party for one! 

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 2 Salmon Steaks or Filet
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 Tbl Olive Oil
  • 1 Tbl Basil
  • 1 tsp Sea Salt or Himalayan Salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder or minced garlic

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. 

  2. Oil your cooking sheet with the olive oil.

  3. Lay the salmon onto the cookie sheet and sprinkle with seasonings and spices.

  4. Slice your lemon and place one slice onto each serving of salmon.

  5. Cook for 10 minutes or until medium-rare, then broil until lightly browned or desired temperature is reached. (You can also opt to broil the fish as the cooking method; if you do so, set a timer for five-minute increments to avoid overcooking.)

  6. Serve as an entree with seasonal sides, like roasted vegetables, Asian Black Rice Salad, or Pamplemousse Greens. It's also delightful atop a rice bowl.

Superfood for you: Ginger

Ginger is one of my three favorite natural anti-inflammatories. (The others being garlic and the lesser known turmeric.) It is one of my staples, always in my fridge. Not only does this root add a yummy zing to my favorite green juice and culinary Asian adventures in the kitchen, it is also a must-have in my natural health toolbox, as well.

Most of you Roses probably know that ginger alleviates a lot of tummy troubles, like motion sickness, pregnancy-related nausea and chemo-induced nausea, but did you know the power of this root goes beyond aiding digestive distress?

Ginger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols, which have been shown in numerous studies to alleviate pain often caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as improve mobility levels (read more here). This root has been shown to be more effective against staph infections than antibiotics, and ginger also reduces chronic systemic inflammation, which has been studied and found to be an underlying cause of many serious diseases, including cancer.

Ginger is potent, even in small doses, so even a gentle increase in your consumption will yield benefits. Not sure how to get more ginger in your life?

A Few Easy Ideas:
– For nausea: Make ginger tea made by steeping one or two 1/2-inch slices (one 1/2-inch slice equals 2/3 of an ounce) of fresh ginger in a cup of hot water
– For joint pain: Add as little as 1/4-inch slice of fresh ginger grated into water or mixed into salad dressing. Here’s my mother’s lovely recipe for “Gla’s Spa Water,” a refreshing, nutritious take on traditional H2O that is quite soothing and delightful no matter what ails you!
– For overall wellbeing: Get creative! Add ginger to your morning smoothie, your green juice, your salad dressing or experiment with entrees and side dishes that include ginger as an ingredient. A little goes a long way with this powerful little guy, so even if you ease your way into a ginger-filled diet, you’ll still reap the benefits.

Holiday Hangover? How ’bout a Detox!

Overeating and indulging are often synonymous with “holiday,” aren’t they? And although we consider the winter holidays the main times of temptations, even the summer, the alleged season of beach bodies and barely-there bikinis, can tempt us with sweet treats, scrumptious side dishes and delicious seasonal cocktails.

Let’s take our most recent holiday extravaganza: July 4th. BBQ’s, potato salads, cold beer and cupcakes, oh my! And when you take your celebration on the road, though, like we did this year with a jaunt to the Holy City of Charleston, SC, the sensational local cuisine (and cocktails) is quite irresistible. It’s inevitable that the lighter-fare summer diet takes a hike! From “adult slushies” to French fries to boiled/fried/steamed shrimp to crab dip…oof. Walks on the beach and around Old Town did little to minimize the physical effects of the decadence, and we certainly felt like we needed to detox by the time we arrived back in the ATL.

Our group of detox’ers wasn’t quite what you’d call “amenable” to the thought of a drastic 180, like the Master Cleanse or other fasting-type cleanse in order to combat our recent eats, so we took a middle-of-the-road approach: clean eating accompanied by this gentle herbal total-body cleanse.

We embarked on a 30-day “adventure cleanse” of eating clean, living right, upping our physical activity, cutting back on sugar and alcohol, and revving up this lifestyle change with proper herbs and supplements to support our bods as they cleaned everything out of our organs and colon. We were very regimented for the first week, and then eased back into our healthy-living for the rest of our month.

Once our bodies adjusted to the herbs and such, we were not really interested in diverting from our plan because the temptations just weren’t appealing, believe it or not! We started feeling so good, it wasn’t worth backsliding.

Here’s a peak into some of the food & drinks we had for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Chia Seed Pudding | A Sweet Treat for Kids of All Ages

Looking for a fun, easy and satisfying snack or dessert for a Sprout in your house? Here’s a KID-FRIENDLY RECIPE for a tapioca-like pudding. Kids love the texture, and they can help make it, too! Spoiler Alert: It’s also a delicious snack or dessert for adults!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • Âź c agave or honey, OR a few tablespoons of powdered stevia (check the container for equivalents, particularly if you opt for liquid stevia, which is not a 1:1 ratio!)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or almond if you’re nut-safe)
  • ½ c chia seeds (read about the benefits here!)
  • Optional: raisins, goji berries, cinnamon, cocoa… Get creative!

*Additional Note: Use a 4:1 liquid to chia seed ratio, so if you’re looking for only half of a cup of pudding, then use 1-2 Tbl of chia seeds.

Directions

  • Warm the milk until it’s above room temperature
  • Whisk the other ingredients into the milk (No whisk? Grab a fork!)
  • Cool until pudding-like consistency
  • If the pudding is too thick for your, or your Sprout’s, taste, whisk in a little more milk even if it’s cooled; if it’s too runny, warm it just until it steams, then whisk in a little more chia and let it cool.
  • If you’re running short on prep time, grab a mason jar or sealable plastic container, add the above ingredients, shake and let it sit. You’ll get the same result, but it takes a little longer to gel.
